Residents in need of a handicapped ramp who own their home, live there as a primary residence and earn less than 70% of an area median income are eligible to apply. As Habitat for Humanity is s "hand up" and not a "hand out", they will ask that the resident contributes 10% - 20% of the total project cost. It is estimated that a ramp constructed by a private contractor could cost as much as $10,000. With their program, the average homeowner's responsibility has been $750 or less, a substantial savings.
